This paper aims to determine the wind potential in two regions of Algeria according to months, seasons, and entire years. An attempt is made to participate to the update of the wind map in this country, by using the collected hourly data during a period of more than thirty years. The Weibull function is employed to perform the wind data analysis. Two regions are considered: Ilizi and Oran, which are located in the southeast and northwest of Algeria, respectively. The values of the Weibull parameters, average power density, and mean velocity are employed to achieve the statistical analysis. At the height of 10 m from the ground, the obtained results revealed that the highest annual average rate of 6.5 m/s occurred at the city of 'Illizi'. It was also found that the city of 'Es-senia' has a middle potential of wind with an annual mean velocity of 3.5m/s. Furthermore, it was observed that the spring season is the most windy season for both regions.

Ethiopia is a land locked country, located in Horn of Africa. The country power generation does not meet the national demand of the people. The aim of the paper is to review a current status, future potential and barriers on development of renewable energy for power generations in Ethiopia. The approaches would be use of primary and secondary data. The structural question is developed and data collected from experts. Secondary data were also collected from national published report, ministries brief and policy guides. The study used predominate renewable energy resource for power generation such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and waste to energy. Based on the result, the country utilization of the resources like solar, wind and geothermal with less than 1% with respect to the potential except hydro power which is less than 9% from the national reserve. The paper found that finical, technical, policy and regulation are the main barriers that faced on the development renewable energy. Key measurements are strengthened finical institution, establishing capacity building center, initiation active community participation, organizing institution to support development of renewable energy. This proposed measurements and policy issues were based on the evidence faced the country.

The interest in renewable energy has been increasing over the last few years, especially after global awareness regarding the hazardous effect of fossil fuel burning. Energy is the source of growth and the booster of the economic and social development of nations and people. This issue has prompted the Algerian government to adopt a new energy policy by promoting and supporting the development of the clean energy, specially the wind and solar energy. An important result of this policy is that the government intended to construct a wind farm in the southwest desert of Algeria. This paper shows the interest of this investment for the southwest region of Algeria, which is installed in Teberkine in Adrar city with an High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) connection to improve the power quality in this region without disturbing the network. The open source software Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) is used in our simulations to improve the calculations.
